SINTEF's goal is to contribute to wealth creation and to the sound and sustainable development of society. The research group SINTEF performs contract research and development for industry and the public sector. It is the largest independent research organisation in Scandinavia with a total of around 2000 employees. SINTEF performs projects primarily within the technology area, but also in natural sciences, medicine, and the social sciences. SINTEF has approximately 1800 employees, 1300 of which are located in Trondheim and 450 in Oslo. We have offices in Bergen, Stavanger and Ålesund, in addition to offices in Houston, Texas (USA), Skopje (Republic of Macedonia), Warsaw and Cracow (Poland), and a laboratory in Hirtshals (Denmark). SINTEF's head office is in Trondheim. SINTEF Technology and Society will be the active unit of SINTEF in this project, represented by the department Productivity and Project Management. The department has been working with research and development within technical management systems for more than three decades. During the last five years, particular emphasis has been on the field of manufacturing management, change management, and knowledge management/e-Learning.

ALFAMICRO was founded in 1983, with the objective to do research, consultancy and engineering services to support advanced IT solutions. Telecommunications, multimedia applications and Web Services complement the solutions developed and implemented in the field. The company also develops applied research with the aim to further develop the technologies utilized in the implementation of new working paradigms such as electronic commerce, digital collaborative business, dynamic virtual work environments, innovation networks, Living Labs, e-Learning and semantic GRID with the objective of supporting companies to achieve sustained global competitiveness. ALFAMICRO became in the late 80’s a leading service provider in Portugal for the ITC sector. These activities comprise market surveys, strategy creation, foresight studies, policy recommendations, Programme definition and Action Plans as illustrated by the Integrated Programme for Information Technologies and the Integrated Programme for the knowledge society and sustainable innovation of Madeira Island. Helsinki School of Economics

Center for Knowledge and Innovation Research (CKIR) is an international, multidisciplinary research institute based in the Helsinki School of Economics (HSE) and belongs to the international Media, Interface, and Network Design Labs (M.I.N.D. Labs) consortium (http://www.mindlab.org/). In addition to its other research foci, CKIR is specialized in experimental media psychology and research on the interaction of humans with, and human-centered design of, media services and technology (e.g., mobile devices), (entertainment and serious) digital games, social communication through technology (e.g., in knowledge work), and the user experience of technology. Research also focuses on human, social, and technological interaction in enabling environments (Livinglab). In addition to its other research methods, CKIR has high expertise in using psychophysiological and eye-movement recordings to index emotional and attentional processes when humans are interacting with media and technology. CKIR has a state-of-the-art psychophysiology laboratory, including data acquisition systems for recording electroencephalography (EEG), facial electromyography (EMG), electrocardiography (ECG), and electrodermal activity (EDA), among other signals. CKIR has also advanced mobile psychophysiological measurement devices. The research of CKIR yields design-rules for creating, and facilitates the innovation of, media technologies and services that are optimal for human beings from the perspective of emotional and cognitive processes and social interaction. The work of CKIR has been published in major international journals.

INESC-ID

INESC-ID, which in Portuguese stands for Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering: Research and Development is a not-for-profit institution dedicated to research in the field of information technology, electronics and telecommunications. INESC-ID initiated activity in the year 2000 as a result of a reorganization of INESC. The former research groups of INESC have been congregated to form INESC-ID, who is owned in large part by IST (a science and technology school of the Technical University of Lisbon) and INESC. Actually, the activity of INESC-ID is divided in 5 scientific and technological areas: Information Systems, Signal Processing, Electronic Systems, Telecommunications and Solid State Technology. Each of these areas is further divided in several research groups led by senior researchers. Researchers at INESC-ID are in their vast majority university staff and graduate students. INESC-ID has about 80 researchers. Of these, 50 are senior researchers holding a PhD degree or equivalent, and the remaining are preparing their Master's or PhD dissertations. Since IST is the main owner of INESC-ID, the majority of researchers also have teaching positions at IST. On the whole, INESC-ID has about 50 graduate students, who receive grants from the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology (FCT), or are supported by research contracts. INESC-ID has a rich background in the areas of Real-Time Rendering, 3D Game Programming, Intelligent User Interfaces, Augmented Reality and Networked Virtual Environments. Indeed, INESC-ID has been involved in several research projects both at the National and European Level. Namely, in national projects INESC-ID has developed a massive role-playing game, the “Lost Ages”, and “Peace and War Games: A Large Scale Simulation Over the Internet”.

Norwegian University of Science and Technology

NTNU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, is located in Trondheim, Norway. It is the national centre for technological education and research within technology and natural sciences. NTNU also covers social sciences and the humanities and have a special national mandate for education and research integrating technology, social sciences and humanities. Some key figures are: 7 faculties and 53 departments, 20 000 students, half of these are studying technology or the natural sciences. Ca 3570 degrees awarded each year: 1100 bachelor’s, 2200 master’s and 270 doctoral degrees. There are about 750 international students. 4200 staff, over half in academic or scientific positions. We are engaged in about 2300 R&D projects and participate actively in the European Commission’s 6th and 7th framework programmes. NTNU has a recognized competence in Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) and has worked extensively with pedagogic approaches suited for this. Especially Program for learning with ICT (LIKT) has been active in this field (which is a part of NTNU’s Strategic Areas) . LIKT is based on an cross-curricular and multidisciplinary approaches to the field. UNIPED is a section of Program for teacher training that offers training and courses to the university staff. The section has also the responsibility to introduce the teacher staff to new technology enhanced teaching and learning methods.

Graz University of Technology/Knowledge Management Institute

The Knowledge Management Institute at the Graz University of Technology (www.kmi.tugraz.at) undertakes interdisciplinary research on Knowledge Management and Technology Enhanced Learning in a broad spectrum of domains, integrating technological and application-oriented perspectives, including cognitive and social science aspects. Leveraging its expertise, TUG aims to make a substantial contribution to teaching within the "Software Development and Economy" Study Program of Graz University of Technology. The technology-oriented research stream focuses on acquiring, managing and applying semantic metadata and ontologies. From an applied perspective, TUG-KMI investigates the use of social software in the context of Web 2.0 to build structures and transfer knowledge within and across individuals, institutions, and organizations. A special focus in this area is on contextualizing and personalizing learning events in the professional workplace and other learning environments. The focus of research from a cognitive psychological viewpoint is on the investigation of the structures of cognitive processes, the representation and modelling of knowledge and competencies as well as their applications in individualised web-based testing and in adaptive eLearning systems. Contributing to and participating in the empirical evaluation and validation of eLearning based on scientifically sound methodologies also falls within the field of TUG-KMI’s expertise. TUG-KMI closely cooperates with University of Graz (Department of Psychology, Department of Information Science) and the Know-Center, Austria's K+ Competence Center for Knowledge Management, and therefore retains close connections with Austrian corporate partners.

UCL has more than 3,800 academic and research staff in 72. Nobel Prizes have been awarded to 18 academics and graduates, and the current staff includes 35 fellows of the Royal Society, 27 Fellows of the British Academy, 13 Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering and 75 Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences. UCL has participated in hundreds of collaborative research projects at the European level, and has a large number of innovative partnerships with commerce and industry. The Department of Computer Science attracts about £3M per annum in research from National funding bodies, the European Union, Industry, the US government and charities. At least 70% of our research is collaborative with industry. UCL Computer Science has been engaged in research computer networks and data communications since 1975, and has a world-wide reputation for innovative research in this area. It is also home to one of the world's leading research groups into Virtual Environments and Computer Graphics, which has researched the use of technology for collaboration at a distance, and co-presence over the past 10 years. Both groups collaborate closely with the Human-Centred Systems researchers, who specialise user-centred innovation.
